Description

What it is, and how it works

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found throughout the body, particularly within the skin, connective tissues and joints. One of its primary functions is to attract and retain water, helping to maintain hydration, support and elasticity within the tissues.

The hyaluronic acid used in dermal fillers is manufactured under controlled conditions to produce a purified gel that is designed to be biocompatible with the body. It is gradually broken down and naturally absorbed over time through the body's normal metabolic processes.

Dermal fillers may be used to restore volume that has reduced as part of the natural ageing process, improve facial proportions, define or support facial contours, and soften selected lines or folds. Treatment may be appropriate for a range of areas of the face and, in some cases, the neck, depending on an individual's anatomy, skin quality and treatment goals.

The procedure involves carefully placing small amounts of hyaluronic acid gel into specific areas beneath the skin using a fine needle or cannula. Treatment plans are individualised following a clinical assessment, taking into account facial anatomy, medical history and the desired outcome.

Results are usually visible immediately following treatment, although mild swelling or bruising can temporarily affect the initial appearance. The final result is generally assessed once any swelling has settled, which may take around two weeks.

The longevity of hyaluronic acid fillers varies according to the product used, the area treated, individual metabolism and lifestyle factors. Many treatments last between 6 and 18 months, although this can vary considerably between individuals and treatment areas.

As the body gradually breaks down the hyaluronic acid, the treated area will slowly return towards its pre-treatment appearance. Repeat treatment may be considered following reassessment if appropriate.

All cosmetic procedures carry potential risks and side effects. These include swelling, bruising, tenderness and temporary redness at the treatment site. Less common but more serious complications, including infection or interruption of the blood supply to the skin, can occur and will be discussed during your consultation. For this reason, dermal filler treatments should only be performed by appropriately trained healthcare professionals with a detailed understanding of facial anatomy.

A comprehensive consultation is carried out before treatment to assess suitability, discuss your expectations, explain the potential benefits and limitations, and ensure you have sufficient information to make an informed decision.
