Description

What it is, and how it works

Polynucleotides are purified fragments of DNA that are used in aesthetic medicine to support the skin's natural repair and regeneration processes. They are highly purified and biocompatible, meaning they are designed to work in harmony with the body's own tissues. Once introduced into the skin, they are gradually broken down through normal metabolic processes.

Rather than adding volume or relaxing muscles, polynucleotide treatments are intended to support overall skin quality. They are thought to promote tissue repair by encouraging the skin's natural regenerative processes, supporting hydration and helping to improve the condition of the skin over time. Research into their use in aesthetic medicine continues to develop.

Following an individual consultation, polynucleotide treatment may be considered for a variety of concerns, including areas where the skin has become thinner, less elastic or shows signs of ageing. Common treatment areas include the face, around the eyes, neck, décolletage and hands. Suitability depends on an individual's anatomy, skin condition, medical history and treatment goals.

Treatment involves a series of small injections placed into the skin using a fine needle or cannula. The procedure typically takes around 20–30 minutes, depending on the areas being treated.

Results develop gradually as the skin responds over time. Most treatment plans involve a course of two to four sessions, usually spaced several weeks apart, although this will vary according to individual needs and clinical assessment. Improvements may continue to develop for several weeks following treatment.

The duration of any improvement varies between individuals and is influenced by factors such as age, skin quality, lifestyle, sun exposure and general health. Maintenance treatments may be discussed following review if they are considered appropriate.

As with any injectable treatment, temporary redness, swelling, bruising, tenderness or small injection-site marks may occur and usually resolve within a few days. Less common complications, including infection or allergic reactions, are possible and will be discussed during your consultation.

A comprehensive consultation is undertaken before treatment to assess suitability, discuss your medical history, explain the current evidence, expected outcomes, potential limitations and possible risks, ensuring you have sufficient information to make an informed decision before proceeding.
