What it is, and how it works

As we age, changes occur not only within the skin but also in the superficial fat (adipose) tissue that helps provide facial support and contour. Over time, this natural redistribution and reduction in facial fat can contribute to a loss of facial volume, reduced structural support and changes in facial shape.

This injectable treatment contains a high concentration of hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally within the body and is gradually broken down through normal metabolic processes. Unlike traditional dermal fillers, which are designed to restore volume in specific areas, this treatment is intended to support the superficial adipose tissue beneath the skin as part of an overall approach to improving facial tissue quality and support.

Following a comprehensive consultation, treatment may be considered for individuals experiencing age-related changes in the mid and lower face where reduced support of the superficial fat compartments contributes to a tired or less defined appearance. Suitability depends on an individual's facial anatomy, tissue characteristics, medical history and treatment goals.

Treatment involves a small number of carefully placed injections into specific anatomical points. The procedure usually takes around 20–30 minutes.

Results develop gradually over the following weeks as the tissues respond. A treatment course commonly consists of two sessions approximately one month apart, although recommendations are individualised following clinical assessment.

The duration of treatment varies between individuals and is influenced by factors including age, metabolism, lifestyle and the condition of the tissues being treated. As the hyaluronic acid is naturally broken down by the body, the effects gradually reduce over time.

As with any injectable procedure, temporary swelling, redness, bruising, tenderness or mild discomfort at the injection sites may occur and usually resolve within a few days. Less common complications, including infection or vascular compromise, will be discussed during your consultation.

A detailed consultation is carried out before treatment to assess your suitability, discuss your expectations and explain the current evidence, expected outcomes, potential limitations and possible risks. This ensures you have the information needed to make an informed decision about whether treatment is appropriate for you.
