What it is, and how it works

Unlike dermal fillers, which are designed to add structure or volume, skin boosters use a softer formulation of hyaluronic acid that is placed within the skin to improve hydration, elasticity and skin texture. The hyaluronic acid is gradually broken down and naturally absorbed by the body over time.

Following an individual consultation, skin boosters may be considered for areas where the skin appears dehydrated, crepey or shows early signs of ageing. Common treatment areas include the face, neck, décolletage and hands. They may also be used in selected areas around the mouth where fine lines have developed as part of the natural ageing process, although suitability depends on the underlying cause of the lines and an individual clinical assessment.

Treatment involves a series of small injections placed into the skin using a fine needle. The procedure usually takes around 20–30 minutes, depending on the area being treated.

Improvements develop gradually as the skin becomes more hydrated. A course of treatment is often recommended, followed by maintenance treatments where appropriate. The longevity of results varies between individuals and is influenced by factors such as age, skin quality, lifestyle and sun exposure.

As with any injectable treatment, temporary redness, swelling, bruising or tenderness at the injection sites may occur and usually settle within a few days. Your consultation will include a discussion of the potential benefits, limitations, possible risks and whether this treatment is appropriate for your individual circumstances.

A personalised assessment is carried out before treatment to ensure you have sufficient information to make an informed decision and that any treatment recommended is appropriate for your anatomy, skin condition and treatment goals.
