Description

What it is, and how it works

A medium-depth chemical peel is a professional skin resurfacing treatment that works by exfoliating the outer layers of the skin and encouraging the skin's natural renewal process. A self-neutralising Jessner's peel combines a blend of exfoliating acids, traditionally including salicylic acid, lactic acid and resorcinol (or alternative formulations where appropriate), which continue to work within the skin without requiring a separate neutralising solution.

The depth of the peel is determined by your skin assessment, the number of layers applied and your individual skin response. This allows the treatment to be tailored to your skin type, medical history and the concerns being addressed.

Following a clinical consultation, a medium-depth peel may be considered for concerns such as uneven skin tone, sun damage, pigmentation, acne-prone skin, superficial acne scarring, fine lines and overall skin texture. Not all skin types or conditions are suitable for this treatment, and a detailed assessment is required before proceeding.

The peel is applied in carefully controlled layers to cleansed skin. During treatment, it is common to experience a warming, tingling or stinging sensation, which usually settles shortly after the application is complete. A temporary white "frosting" of the skin may be seen in some areas, depending on the depth of treatment and individual skin response.

Over the following days, the skin may become tight, darker in appearance and begin to peel. Peeling commonly starts between two and four days after treatment and may continue for several days. The skin should be allowed to shed naturally without picking or removing peeling skin, as this may increase the risk of irritation, pigmentation changes or scarring.

As the skin renews, many people notice improvements in skin texture, clarity and overall skin quality. Individual results vary and may depend on factors such as age, skin condition, lifestyle, sun exposure and adherence to aftercare advice. Some individuals may benefit from a course of treatments, while others may require a single treatment depending on their clinical needs.

Careful aftercare is essential following a medium-depth peel. The treated skin will be more sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) light during healing, and daily use of a broad-spectrum sunscreen, together with avoidance of excessive sun exposure, is recommended. Your clinician will advise you when it is appropriate to resume active skincare products such as retinoids or exfoliating acids.

As with any chemical peel, potential side effects include redness, swelling, tightness, peeling, temporary sensitivity and changes in skin pigmentation. Less common complications, including infection, prolonged redness or scarring, will be discussed during your consultation, along with the steps taken to minimise these risks.

A comprehensive consultation is carried out before treatment to assess your suitability, explain the expected benefits and limitations, discuss potential risks and provide personalised pre- and post-treatment advice, enabling you to make an informed decision about whether this treatment is appropriate for you.
