What it is, and how it works
A dermal roller is a manual microneedling device containing multiple fine, sterile needles that create controlled micro-channels within the surface of the skin. The treatment is designed to stimulate the skin's natural healing response and support the production of new collagen and elastin, which are proteins that contribute to the skin's strength, elasticity and structure.
As we age, the natural production of collagen and elastin gradually declines. This can contribute to fine lines, changes in skin texture, enlarged pores and the appearance of certain types of scars. By creating controlled micro-injuries, a dermal roller encourages the skin's normal repair processes while leaving the surrounding tissue intact.
Following a clinical consultation, dermal rolling may be considered for concerns including fine lines, uneven skin texture, enlarged pores, mild acne scarring, superficial scars and areas of reduced skin quality. It may also be used to improve the absorption of selected topical skincare products immediately following treatment, where clinically appropriate.
Treatment involves rolling the sterile device over the skin in multiple directions to create evenly distributed micro-channels. A topical anaesthetic cream may be used before treatment to improve comfort, depending on the treatment area and needle length. The procedure usually takes between 30 and 60 minutes.
Following treatment, the skin commonly appears red and may feel warm, similar to mild sunburn. Mild swelling, tenderness or pinpoint bleeding may occur and usually settles within a few days. Most people notice that the skin begins to recover over the following 24–72 hours, although recovery time varies depending on the depth of treatment.
Improvements develop gradually as the skin undergoes its natural healing and remodelling processes. A course of treatments, typically spaced several weeks apart, is often recommended, as collagen remodelling occurs over time. Individual results vary depending on the skin concern being treated, age, general health and lifestyle factors.
Following treatment, the skin will be more sensitive. It is important to follow the aftercare advice provided, including keeping the skin clean, avoiding unnecessary irritation and protecting the treated area from ultraviolet (UV) exposure by using a broad-spectrum sunscreen.
As with any procedure that breaks the skin, there are potential risks, including redness, swelling, bruising, infection, temporary pigmentation changes and, rarely, scarring. These risks will be discussed during your consultation together with your suitability for treatment.
A comprehensive consultation is carried out before treatment to assess your skin, discuss your medical history, explain the expected outcomes and limitations, and ensure you have sufficient information to make an informed decision before proceeding.
