What it is, and how it works

A superficial chemical peel is a skin resurfacing treatment that uses alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) to gently exfoliate the outermost layers of the skin. AHAs are naturally derived acids, commonly obtained from fruits, milk sugars and sugar cane, and have been widely used in skincare to improve skin texture and support healthy skin renewal.

As skin naturally renews itself, older skin cells can accumulate on the surface, contributing to a dull complexion, uneven texture and the appearance of fine lines. A superficial AHA peel works by loosening the bonds between these surface skin cells, allowing them to shed more evenly and encouraging the skin's natural renewal process.

Following a clinical consultation, superficial chemical peels may be considered for concerns such as uneven skin texture, dull or tired-looking skin, mild pigmentation, fine lines and certain types of acne-prone or congested skin. Suitability depends on your skin type, medical history, current skincare routine and individual treatment goals.

The treatment involves applying the chemical peel solution to cleansed skin for a carefully controlled period before it is neutralised or removed, depending on the product used. The procedure usually takes around 30–45 minutes.

Most people experience a mild tingling or warming sensation during treatment. Following the peel, the skin may appear pink or feel tight for a short period. Mild dryness or light flaking can occur over the following few days as the outer layer of skin naturally renews. Deeper peeling is not the aim of a superficial AHA peel and may not occur in every individual.

Results develop gradually as the skin completes its normal renewal cycle. Many people notice improvements in skin smoothness, brightness and overall skin quality over the following weeks. A course of treatments, usually spaced several weeks apart, may be recommended depending on your skin concerns and clinical assessment.

Following treatment, it is important to protect the skin from ultraviolet (UV) exposure by using a broad-spectrum sunscreen and following the aftercare advice provided. Temporary sensitivity to sunlight is expected while the skin barrier recovers.

As with any skin treatment, there are potential risks and side effects, including temporary redness, dryness, sensitivity, peeling or irritation. Less common complications, such as prolonged pigmentation changes, infection or allergic reactions, will be discussed during your consultation.

A comprehensive consultation is carried out before treatment to assess your skin, explain the expected benefits and limitations, discuss possible risks and ensure the treatment is appropriate for your individual needs.
